It’s 2021, almost Memorial Day weekend, and we’re finally allowed to travel again! I have multiple family members that work for an airline company and many family members that live 2,000 miles away so I’ve done my fair share of traveling (over the past couple decades) and have definitely learned a thing or two about traveling do’s & don’ts. In case you’re feeling a little bit rusty on what to wear while traveling (because it’s been SO long) I’ve put together a list of reminders for you!
1. Leggings
It can really be any form of stretchy pants just as long as they’re comfortable. I always feel so restricted sitting in those tiny seats on the plane so I definitely don’t want to feel that way in my clothing. Spanx are my absolute favorite because they are so soft and comfortable, but also suck everything in and make me feel put together. Biker shorts are also a great option for the summertime or if you’re traveling somewhere warm.
2. Layer Up!
So important when traveling! The temperature in the airport and on the plane can be so unpredictable, not to mention you’re most likely traveling to another state or country since you’re flying, so weather changes can be drastic. I like to take a lightweight jacket, sweater, or overshirt with me just in case.
Pro Tip: Layer with something that also looks cute around your waist so it doesn’t take up precious real estate in your bag.
3. Backpack Instead of Suitcase
I’ve learned in my many years of traveling that it’s always so much easier and quicker to carry on the plane a small bag that can fit in the space under the seat versus a small suitcase that has to be put in the overhead bin. Those bins are just a pain- they fill up quickly so you may have to find space for your suitcase far from your seat, you can’t just go and grab something from your suitcase during the flight because they’re high up making it really awkward to get it back down (especially if someone is sitting by the aisle), also waiting for everyone to grab their bags from the bins makes getting off the plane a much slower process. I like to just bring a backpack with me so my hands are free while walking around the airport, I can easily store my bag right in front of me, and get off the plane quickly in case I have to catch another flight immediately after.
4. Slip-on Shoes
I started the majority of my traveling right after 9/11 so wearing shoes that can quickly and easily slip on and off for the TSA check was instilled in my brain early on. Your shoes also need to be comfy because depending on the size of airports you’ll probably be doing a lot of walking. This style is my go-to because they have memory foam insoles, restock every year in different colors/patterns, and are so affordable!
5. No Metal Accessories
Since we’re on the topic of TSA- metal accessories, such as, jewelry, watches, or belts are a big no-no. It takes way too long to take everything off to be scanned and then put it all back on again. Most times I need to grab something to eat before my flight so if I’m wasting valuable time taking my jewelry on and off then that’s just less time I get to eat. No bueno.
The entire theme for this blog post, if you haven’t already caught on, is to wear articles of clothing that make traveling easier, faster, and help you feel your most comfortable. As long as you keep that in mind, you should be fine. I hope this list is useful if you’re preparing to travel soon! Also, let me know in the comments where you’re traveling to this year!
