This has been a long time coming since Elyssia is already 9 months old now, but I finally sat down and went through everything that’s been essential to us while having a 3-6 month old baby and wanted to pass it along. I posted a 0-3 month baby must-haves post a while back (you can find it here.) I was pretty thorough with that post and we still use practically everything on that list, with some exceptions, so definitely go read that one first. I just wanted to update it a little by adding a few more things that we have also found helpful during months 3-6.
Nested Bean Sleep Sack– this product was mentioned in my previous post, but we did find that the thicker (2.5 TOG) version is a much better option to have in the wintertime. I also recommend pairing it with pajamas that have foldover mitts to keep their hands warmer too.
Camilia Teething Drops– I’ve used this with both of my babies and it’s magic! They soothe baby within minutes! I love that it’s a safer, homeopathic option, but also really effective. They aren’t messy, both my babies loved the flavor, and the product is extremely easy to use. I love that they come packaged separately, as well, because I can keep extras in the diaper bag without worrying about the entire product leaking or spilling out everywhere.
Teething Tip: Make popsicles out of breastmilk!
Boppy Baby Carrier– I’ve tried 3 or 4 different baby carriers and this one by Boppy is the most comfortable, least confusing, and easiest to put on- even by yourself! It has the support of a more structured carrier, but the comfort and flexibility of a wrap. The material is a cooling spandex-like fabric too which helps keep you and baby cool. If you’ve ever worn a baby then you know just how hot it can get and in warmer states, like Texas, that can be pretty dangerous. It’s easy to wash, travel with, and just looks really cute!
Carseat Toy– I did mention this in the 0-3 post, but I would suggest getting another so you can switch them out. I noticed Elyssia seemed to get bored of having the same toy all the time and wouldn’t play with it as much anymore so we got her a second one and she loves it again!
Diaper Pail– I meant to add this to my previous baby must-have post, but I completely forgot so adding it here. We had an Ubbi when Lucca was a baby and that was the WORST diaper pail. Attractive, yes. Functional, absolutely not. After a few months of use, we literally had to drop the diaper and run out of the room and shut the door or it would stink up the entire house- regardless if it was a brand new bag! We even aired it out outside for like a week and it still smelled horrific so we tossed it and replaced it with this one. Not as attractive, but much more affordable and works amazingly well! The bags are easy to change out and it contains the smell without retaining it permanently.
Milestone Plaques– (Again, meant to add this one to the first post.) Not necessarily a “must-have” but a really great way to document baby’s growth in the first year. It just goes by so fast and after a couple years just seems like such a blur, so it’s really nice to have photos of it to remember all the stages.
And if you’re looking for a cute name plaque for the birth announcement this one by Lucca and Frankie is my fave and I absolutely adore the shop owner, Sarah!
Dreft Stain Remover– Every time I would put a brand new outfit on Ely, without fail, she would poop right through it, so this product very quickly became my best friend. I would spray the clothing with Dreft right after it happened, wait about five minutes, spray it again, wait another five and then wash it and it worked great! Some stains require a bit more attention, but this method works for us most of the time.
Bonus Tip: They make a travel-friendly pen version of this too so I keep one in the diaper bag at all times!
Reusable Changing Mat– We have one for diaper changes while we’re out and about. It is so nice to have! It’s waterproof, easy to clean and compact! We mainly use ours in the car (since I don’t love public restrooms) and i’ll just lay it out on my lap and change her that way, but you could always take it into a public restroom to cover the changing table to make it more sanitary and then just wipe it down afterward. The exact mat we have isn’t available anymore so I’ve linked a very similar one.
Foam Play Mat– This is so important if you have hard floors. We only have carpet in the bedrooms so I purchased play mats for our living room when Lucca started crawling and am so happy I did! I can’t even count how many times they’ve fallen down and hit their heads on the these mats and if they weren’t there to cushion the fall they could have really gotten hurt. Ours were a bit more expensive than others I’ve seen, but because it was in our living room I wanted a neutral color and to have a rug-like feel to it. We also ended up getting two of them and snapped them together for a larger play area. Highly recommend!
Bath Thermometer– This is such a great gadget if you’te wanting piece of mind that the bath water is the perfect temperature. We’ve used ours since Lucca’s very first bath almost 3 1/2 years ago and it’s still going strong. It’s just a really great safety product to have for the bath success baby skin is so sensitive.
Faucet Cover & Tub Mat– Since we’re on the topic of bath safety these two products are essential for bath time. Both fairly self-explanatory: the faucet cover saves them from getting hurt during a fall and the grippy tub mat provides traction to prevent slipping. These are probably more for crawlers and beyond, but it doesn’t hurt to be proactive and grab these beforehand just in case.
If you are shopping for a baby or soon-to-be mama I really hope this list has been helpful! I am planning on making lists for 6-9 & 9-12 months too so stay tuned for those future posts! Have the best day!!
xx, Talea
