The easiest and quickest way to throw an outfit together while still looking put together is by creating outfit formulas. These formulas can be tailored to your specific style, mood, and level of comfort so when you’re running late and in a pinch or just don’t feel like figuring out what to wear you can pull out these pre-made formulas and effortlessly pull together a look that’s well thought out, but still comfortable and 100% you!
This is where the fourth piece rule comes in. Traditionally, in fashion, it’s better known as the rule of thirds which refers to a top, bottoms, and a third outfit element that elevates the look. The fourth piece rule is essentially the same thing, but since shoes can sometimes make an entire outfit I like to include them as well.
As I previously mentioned, the first three elements will be a top, bottoms, and shoes so the fourth piece could be anything from a hat, sweater, jacket, bag, scarf, vest, etc. Below I have put together some simple neutral outfits with a selection of fourth pieces to give you a better idea. If you want to take it a step further and make it even easier to dress well I highly recommend having a capsule wardrobe with a similar color palette. It makes switching pieces around effortless and allows you to create so many more outfit looks. I will be posting about that soon so stay tuned!
